Post-PC devices significantly expanding audience for content

quoted from asymco site:
“Charles Arthur of The Guardian writes that PC sales “may have passed their peak“. That’s a powerful, concise statement. It’s backed up by a quote from Gartner’s Mikako Kitagawa:

“This was the third consecutive quarter of mobile PC shipment declines in the US”

quoted:

“The green line shows the PC industry excluding both the Mac and the iPad. Although it might include Linux or computers sold without an OS, the label “Windows PC” is a fairly close approximation. It shows that the market excluding Apple entered contraction this quarter and is out of sync with overall economic recovery and growth.

The red line shows the behavior of the Mac franchise. It’s well ahead of the overall market with 2x to 3x the growth. This has been a pattern for over 18 quarters.  I had some thoughts on this in a November 2010 hypothesis.

But the most telling line is the orange line which includes both the Mac and the iPad. In an industry where growth is usually measured in single digits, the iPad business brings growth in three digits.”

Apple to open a ‘Pop-Up’ store at SXSW.

by adrian on 13-Mar-2011

Shonda Novak of the American Statesman just posted an interesting article on a creative move that Apple is doing in the midst of the SXSW Festival in Austin, TX.

quote:
Apple Inc. will open a temporary store Friday in the Scarbrough Building on Congress Avenue downtown, timed to the start of South by Southwest Interactive Conference and the release of the iPad 2 tablet computer.

On Wednesday, construction workers were busy retrofitting the 5,000-square-foot space in the building, at Congress and West Sixth Street, that Apple will lease for two weeks. Black vinyl sheeting covered the windows fronting Congress.

Rance Wilemon, a partner in Plat.Form Real Estate, has been trying to land an Apple store in the Second Street District since his firm took over leasing for that area last summer.

Wilemon said the deal for Apple’s popup, or temporary, store came together quickly. He said an Apple real estate representative notified him Monday that the company had settled on Sixth and Congress for the location. “They came in town on Monday, did a quick tour, found a spot, and they’re in there working and will open by Friday,” Wilemon said. [...]

Popup stores are a trend for retailers that want to unveil products or test a new location without committing to a permanent space.

But Wilemon said the Apple store on Congress “is not as much to test the market as much as it is to be a part” of SXSW, the music, film and interactive event that draws thousands of people to Austin annually.

“There’s a huge opportunity to get brand recognition to a large audience during” SXSW, Wilemon said.
