May Day anniversary

It’s a strange coincidence that a French word for “help me” (“m’aider”) should not only mutate into English usage as a pilot’s distress call but do so as a homophone (“mayday”) for the Communist holiday (May Day) on which Gary Powers was shot down over the USSR 50 years ago. Was it also a coincidence that ex-radar operator Lee Harvey Oswald had defected to the USSR at the time? It boggles the mind.
